Chothani, D’Amorim lead comeback win

SILVER CITY, N.M. (April 17, 2026) – Beginning its final road trip of the 2026 season, The University of Texas Permian Basin men's tennis team picked up its second conference win of the year with a 4-3 comeback win at Western New Mexico University thanks to winning the final two matches by freshmen Kabir Chothani at No. 4 singles and Joao D'Amorim at No. 1 singles.

All three doubles matches were decided by the same 6-3 score. Philipp Gaurieder and Andrew Hunsley defeated Djamel-Dine Bey and Christoph Lund-Kuhl in the first match at No. 3 doubles, and then D'Amorim and Nehal Naidoo defeated Yannik Rogulski and Jack Semper in the decider at No. 1 doubles.

After winning the doubles point, UTPB went up 2-1 after a 6-1, 6-4 win by Naidoo over Rogulski at No. 3 singles.

The Falcons then found themselves down 3-2 and needing to win both the final two singles matches to steal the win.

Chothani first defeated Lund-Kuhl with a first-set tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, at No. 4 singles, and then after trailing 2-0 in the third set in the decisive match at No. 1 singles, D'Amorim clinched it with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 comeback win over Semper.

Team Records:
  • With their four straight win over the Mustangs, the Falcons improve to 5-12 overall and are now 2-4 in the Lone Star Conference. WNMU falls to 6-8 and 2-3.
  • Earlier this season, WNMU was ranked as high as No. 34 in the ITA Rankings.

Next Up: UTPB will play in its final road match of the season at Sul Ross State University starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at the Pete P. Gallego Tennis Center in Alpine, Texas.
