PORTALES, N.M. (September 20, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin women's soccer team won a 3-0 decision at Eastern New Mexico University during its first road match of the 2025 season. It was the first win on the road and the first win in Lone Star Conference action for the Falcons under new head coach
Garrett Kull.
This was the second straight season that UTPB (2-1-1 overall, 1-1-0 Lone Star Conference) played on the road at ENMU (0-4-0, 0-1-0). It was also the home opener for the Greyhounds, who have now been outscored 12-0 this season.
The Falcons had won three straight matches against the Greyhounds before suffering a 2-0 loss on the road last year during the final week of the season. In addition, the teams had a streak of four straight matches being decided by just one goal until the decision last season. Lastly, it was just the second win in nine matches for UTPB on the road at ENMU.
A breakaway by ENMU just 13 minutes into the match saw Arissa C'deBaca with a chance with
Valeria Delgado closing in on her, and C'deBaca's shot resulted in a slow roller going wide while moving across the box.
Both teams had a long shot on goal that was easily corralled by the goalkeeper in the scoreless first half. The Falcons also had a pair of offsides calls go against them in the first half, each of which looked to create a one-on-one vs. the ENMU starting goalkeeper, Aja Gonzales.
Approaching the 10-minute mark in the first half,
Molly King intercepted a pass by the ENMU defense and had the ball on the right side with a little bit of green grass in front of her, but choose to put up her shot from just outside the box as it went wide left.
The lone corner kick of the first half did not come until the final six minutes of the period on an attempt by
Cassandra Ramirez, who did a good job of putting the ball into the middle of the box.
In the first 10 minutes of the second half, another corner kick from Ramirez resulted in a shot off the body by King that was just blocked away by the ENMU defense, but gave Ramirez and the Falcons another corner kick. This time, Ramirez placed it beautifully to the far side of the goal to King, who delivered it with a header back across the goal and into the back of the net.
It was the first-career goal for King, a freshman forward from Haslet, Texas.
Just a few moments after a goalkeeper change for ENMU, a throw-in by
Luz Capuchino found Ramirez with a defender draped on her back. Ramirez essentially boxed out her defender, spun around to the open space and fired the shot right over the head of the new keeper, Rosie Willmott Joyce.
With an assist and a goal, Ramirez had her second performance in four matches so far this season with an assist and at least one goal scored.
With the match not over yet and the Greyhounds desperately trying to cut it to a one-goal deficit, Delgado added two more saves to her ledger in the second half and finished with three saves before giving way to
Alexia Hernandez, a freshman from Odessa, Texas, later in the match.
The final goal came in the final four minutes when
Mikaela Corral, a freshman midfielder from Cypress, Texas, overcame a crowd of three other players to bring in the ball on the pass from
Natalia Salas and fire off her shot from inside the box.
In the final 30 seconds of the match and with no one left defending the goal, a one-touch from over 30 yards out by freshman forward
Mariela Ojeda was denied by the crossbar.
The bulk of offensive possession and opportunities was definitely in UTPB's advantage in the second half as the Falcons outshot the Greyhounds 11-6 and held a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks in the final 45 minutes.
Coach Kull spoke on his first conference win, saying "It was a very intense game and one that had our staff making a lot of adjustments at halftime. I was very pleased that the team went out and executed in the second half. I thought it was great we got two freshmen on the score sheet.
Molly King has been really impactful for us off the bench and was happy to see her find the back of the net in her start.
Mikaela Corral has been a great starter for us; I think she really excelled today in finding winnable battles. You're always proud when a team can find a way to get a result in a sweaty, gritty, tough game. ENMU really battled, and we're going to take what we've learned and use it the rest of the season."
Next up, UTPB returns home on Wednesday, September 24, to host Texas A&M International University at 7 p.m. at the UTPB Soccer Field.
