Penalty kick goal sends Falcons to 1-0 loss

ODESSA, Texas (September 24, 2025) – A tough foul call in the box and a penalty kick goal against the Falcons in the 72nd minute sent The University of Texas Permian Basin women's soccer team to a 1-0 loss at home against Texas A&M International University in Lone Star Conference action on Wednesday night.

UTPB falls to 2-2-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the LSC, and is now 0-5-4 in its last nine meetings against TAMIU (2-2-2, 1-1-1), a team the Falcons have not defeated since 2015.

It looked for awhile like the two teams might tie for the second year in a row as the Falcons outshot the Dustdevils 6-1 in the first half, but shots on goal were even a one apiece while corner kicks were even a two apiece.

In the second half, however, TAMIU put seven of its eight shot attempts on target, causing UTPB goalkeeper Valeria Delgado to have to make six saves in the period.

The one shot Delgado could not save was the game-winning penalty kick for Laura Cardenas, who sent the ball into the bottom right side of the goal while Delgado jumped to her right instead of to her left.

Delgado made a great save on a one-on-one in the middle of the box earlier in the match (22nd minute) as Camila Razcon shot toward the lower left side of the goal and Delgado made a nice diving save coming forward to make the stop.

Still scoreless in the 57th minute, Natalia Salas had an opportunity to score near the goal after her defender fell down, but her shot was blocked.

After the goal by TAMIU, UTPB's final three attempts saw Dustdevils' goalkeeper Latae Rodriguez make saves on shots by Cassandra Ramirez with seven minutes left, Mariela Ojeda in the 87th minute and Allyson Reed in the 88th minute, giving her four saves for the match to go along with her first shutout win of the season.

UTPB outshot TAMIU 15-9 overall, but was outshot 8-4 on shots on goal.

"It was a tough result tonight when you take more shots than your opponent and aren't able to find the back of the net," spoke Head Coach Garrett Kull. "For us, it's been a bit hit and miss when it comes to the goal scoring opportunities. Again, the defense managed a game and gave us chances to take the points, but for us, it is about making sure we capitalize on those chances in front of the goal moving forward."

Next up, UTPB hits the road for just the second time this season, playing at The University of Texas at Dallas at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 27.
