Pride in Every Step: Natalia Salas Celebrates Her Roots During Hispanic Heritage Month

9/18/2025 11:30:00 AM

Meet Natalia Salas, a senior soccer player at UTPB majoring in Business Management. For Salas identifying as Hispanic-Latina is important to her because it's a way for her to connect with her culture.

"This aspect of my identity is important to me because it connects me to my culture, my values, and my family," said Salas. "Growing up in a Hispanic community has shaped the way I see the world and the relationships I build. It has given me a strong sense of pride, resilience, and gratitude, and it guides the person I strive to become in the future."

Growing up in Costa Rica meant more than just living in a beautiful country for Salas —it meant being surrounded by a culture rich in warmth, connection, and tradition.

"Being born and raised in Costa Rica, I celebrated this identity every single day," said Salas. "From the traditions, food, and music, to the way people come together and care for one another, the culture is something I carry with me wherever I go. The environment and community I grew up in are unique and irreplaceable, and they've taught me the importance of connection and belonging."

For many students like Salas, UTPB stands out for its strong sense of community, where inclusiveness, support, and genuine care define the campus experience – and at the heart of it all are the people who make it memorable.

"Most of all, I value my team, the friendships, memories, and experiences I've shared with them over the past three years have been the highlight of my time here."
