ODESSA, Texas (October 24, 2026) – A late goal in the 76th minute by the Rambelles spoiled Senior Day for The University of Texas Permian Basin women's soccer team as the Falcons fell 1-0 against Angelo State University on a windy Saturday afternoon at the UTPB Soccer Field. It was the final career match for goalkeeper
Valeria Delgado and forward
Cassandra Ramirez, who were honored prior to the start of the match.
UTPB (4-13-0 overall, 1-13-0 Lone Star Conference) was on the offensive early and controlled possession in the opening 10 minutes of the match. The Falcons took the first shot of the match with a shot on goal by
Breanna Reagan less than three minutes in.
Playing in the final match of her career, Ramirez had the green light and did not hold back as she fired off seven total shots and four shots on goal in the first half.
Five and a half minutes in, a handball on ASU (3-10-4, 2-8-3) led to a free kick for Ramirez from 30 yards out, and she ripped a shot just high of the goal. Then eight minutes in, Ramirez challenged the ASU goalkeeper, Latae Rodriguez, with a long shot to the top-left corner that was just knocked away for a corner kick.
12 minutes in, a goal kick by Delgado went over everybody and was tracked down by Ramirez on the opposite side of the field. With only one defender in between her and the goal, Ramirez shot faked to make her defender miss and then cut inside before sending her shot to the bottom-left of the goal, where it was wedged in between the keeper and the post for a save.
Ramirez totaled six shots and three shots on goal in the first 15 minutes of the match.
UTPB seemingly broke through in the 30th minute when a great pass from Ramirez up to Reagan was followed by a pass from Reagan past the goalkeeper and over to
Molly King, who had a wide-open goal to score on, but at the last second the offside flag came up to wipe out the goal by King.
In the 39th minute, it was King cutting off a pass from ASU and sending it straight to Ramirez, who fired a laser, but it was right on line to Rodriguez, who held her ground for the save.
UTPB led 7-2 on shot attempts in the first 15 minutes of the match, but was outshot 6-3 during the rest of the first half. In all, UTPB led 10-8 on total shots and 5-2 on shots on goal in the first half, but Rodriguez was there to make all five saves. In the second half, however, the two teams were limited to just a combined seven shot attempts.
Now playing going into the wind in the second half, UTPB simply did not have as many shot opportunities as it did earlier in the match.
Neither team had a shot attempt in the second half until over 13 minutes in when a free kick by Reagan from 24 yards out was blocked by the wall of Rambelle defenders.
The only time UTPB challenged Rodriguez in the second half came in the 65th minute when
Trinity Vasquez's shot nearly snuck in near the top of the goal before the save by Rodriguez at the last second.
In all, the match featured five offside calls on UTPB, with the last one coming just six minutes before ASU broke through with the lone goal of the match in the 76th minute. The goal came as Carley Martinez crossed it into the box to Sienna Schutte for the one-touch into the top-right corner of the goal.
That shot took the air out of the pitch.
Before that goal, the UTPB defense, anchored by Vasquez,
Alyssa Pipes,
Brooklyn Westfall,
Jayden Murgia,
Mikaela Corral and
Haylee Huttenhow, limited the Rambelles to just one shot attempt in the first 30 minutes of the second half.
Thanks in large part to that defense and five blocked shots in the first half, Delgado did not have much work to do in the first three-fourths of the match, making three easy saves in the first 62 minutes before the deciding shot attempt came 14 minutes later.
Reagan and Schutte matched her each other with four total shots and one shot on goal, but it was the shot on goal for Schutte that made the difference in the end. In addition, Rodriguez recorded six saves to preserve the shutout in goal for the Belles, including making five saves in the opening half as UTPB looked to find an early breakthrough.
Delgado played all 90 minutes 10 times this season, including in nine of the final 10 matches of the year. She totaled at least five saves in 11 out of 14 conference matches, including in nine straight matches leading up to Senior Day. On Wednesday, September 30, vs. Lubbock Christian University, she made a career-high 12 saves.
Ramirez's seven shots for the match were a season-high and were just three short of her career-high (10) set last season. She led the Falcons with a career-high five goals and 11 points on the season, her second year in a row with 11 points and second in a row leading the team in both goals and points.
"I just want to thank Cassandra and Valeria for all their dedication to UTPB," said UTPB Head Women's Soccer Coach
Garrett Kull after the final match of the season. "It has been a pleasure to get to coach them, and they believed in my vision for the Falcons. They have been fantastic leaders, and it is unfortunate we could not send them out on a high note."
