Women’s golf finishes regular season in Goodyear

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (April 5, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin women's golf team played in its final tournament of the 2024-25 regular season, competing at the RJGA Palm Valley Classic hosted by Western New Mexico University at the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.

UTPB (22nd out of 22 teams) finished at 323-320; 643 (+67), shot plus-32 during round two and saw its top-three golfers improve their scores and move up the leaderboard during the final round.

UTPB nearly moved up a spot during the final round as Northwest Nazarene (313-329; 642; +66) shot plus-41 during round two, nine strokes behind the Falcons, and finished the tournament just one stroke ahead overall. Hawaii - Hilo (314-322; 636; +60) was two strokes behind the Falcons during round two and finished just seven strokes ahead for the tournament.

The Falcons were 13th in both par-3 scoring (3.50; +16) and par-4 scoring (4.39; +31).

Gabriela Maldonado (76-73; 149) shot plus-one during round two, finished at plus-five for the tournament and rose 28 spots on the leaderboard from round one to round two to finish in a tie for 23rd place out of 116 golfers. She was tied for third in the tournament in par-3 scoring (3.00; E) and was tied for seventh in birdies (27). Maldonado has now led UTPB in all three of its traditional tournaments this Spring season after finishing in fifth place at the Jack Brown Memorial (Feb. 3-4) and 19th at the Rattler Invitational (Feb. 24-25).

Ainhoa Gurruchaga (77-74; 151) shot plus-two during round two, finished at plus-seven overall and rose 23 spots to finish in a tie for 41st. She was tied for 16th in par-4 scoring (4.05; +1) and was tied for 11th in birdies (26).

Lorena Etxeberria (80-78; 158) shot plus-six during round two and rose three spots to tie for 84th, and Ella Veretto (90-95; 185) finished 115th.

UTPB Head Golf Coach Paul Chavez spoke, "Not the result we wanted, but we had some good individual performances. Anytime you are playing with four players, it makes it extremely tough because every stroke counts. We will get some good practice in before the Lone Star Conference Championship and try to improve our results."

Next up for the Falcons is the Lone Star Conference Championship. The championship begins on Monday, April 21, from the Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club in Rockwall, Texas.
