Falcons drop series finale to No. 3 Patriots

ODESSA, Texas (March 30, 2025) – Looking to win the final game of its series against the No. 3 nationally-ranked team in NCAA Division II after recording a one-hit shutout the day before, The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team led 4-1 after three innings, but was outscored 14-0 to end the game as the Falcons fell 15-4 at home against The University of Texas at Tyler.

UTPB (9-24 overall, 9-23 Lone Star Conference) allowed UT Tyler (28-9, 28-8) to score three-plus runs in four of the final five innings. The Patriots scored a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and then did in same in the eighth and ninth innings.

The Falcons led 2-0 after the first inning after a leadoff single up the middle by Kaleb Scull, a sacrifice bunt by Jack Haggerty, a walk by Carson Johnson, an RBI-single through the left side by Brent Rigtrup to score Scull and a sacrifice fly to left field by Makai DeSoto to score Johnson.

UTPB would then lead 4-1 after Rigtrup and DeSoto again both recorded an RBI on back-to back singles scoring Haggerty and Johnson in the third inning.

Trevor Barth (0-8) allowed three hits and two walks through the first four innings, but after an error at second base and a two-out walk in the top of the fifth, gave up three straight two-out RBI-hits, including an RBI-double down the left field line, a two-run triple to right center field, and an RBI-single through the left side.

Each of the first five runs surrendered by Barth through five innings were unearned, but in the sixth, back-to-back singles to start off the inning were later followed by back-to-back one-out RBI-singles to chase him from the game.

In the ninth inning, UT Tyler scored four runs on just one hit and four walks. Three of the four runs in the inning scored on a wild pitch while the other came via an RBI-walk. It took three UTPB pitchers to each record one out and get through the inning.

In all, the UTPB pitching staff allowed 10 earned runs, 17 hits, 10 walks, three hit by pitches, and had three wild pitches. Every starter for UT Tyler recorded at least one hit.

For the UTPB offense, Rigtrup was 3-for-4 with two RBI's, Johnson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, DeSoto was 2-for-4 with two RBI's, and Dayton Osborn was also 2-for-4.

Next up, the Falcons will begin their fifth Lone Star Conference series on the road this season. The Falcons will battle Sul Ross State University beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 4, from Alpine, Texas.
