HOBBS, N.M. (March 27, 2025) – After hosting the Thunderbirds earlier this month, The University of Texas Permian Basin women's golf team traveled to No. 5-ranked (NJCAA) New Mexico Junior College for a dual match on Wednesday, March 26, and this time earned a 3-1 victory at Rockwind Community Links Golf Club.
Lorena Etxeberria defeated Ashleigh Johnson 79-83.
Ella Veretto fell 83-89 against Jordyn Cruz.
Both
Ainhoa Gurruchaga and
Gabriela Maldonado matched up against Kyleigh McGowen. Gurruchaga defeated McGowen 79-81 and Maldonado won 74-81.
The Falcons shot 321 as a team.
"Overall the team played well and I am very pleased with their performance up and down the lineup," said Head Coach
Paul Chavez. They battled the windy conditions and handled the course very well, so that was a good sign. Gaby had the low round of the day and played great all day, but everyone had good, solid days. It was great team effort."
UTPB finishes 2-1 in dual matches this Spring. Etxeberria led the team with a 3-0 record. All three of UTPB's dual matches this Spring have been medal match format. Medal match play is a one-on-one golf competition where you compete directly against an opponent in a match, but instead of the winner being the golfer who has won the greater number of holes, it is person who has shot the lowest total number of shots.
Coach Chavez concluded, "We want to bring this momentum with us to Arizona and have a good performance there. We are trending in the right direction, and hopefully by conference play everyone will be at their best, and we will see what happens then."
UTPB will return to a traditional tournament format for its final action before the Lone Star Conference Championship. The Falcons will compete at the RJGA Palm Valley Classic on Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5, at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.
