Baseball rebounds with two wins at Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. (March 15, 2025) – For the first time this season, The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team swept a doubleheader as the Falcons won by scores of 12-2 and 9-6 on Saturday at Cameron University.

Game 1 (UTPB 12, CU 2):
  • After giving up 13 hits and being outscored 17-2 to end the game on Friday, UTPB limited Cameron to just three hits in game one on Saturday while scoring each of the final 12 runs of the contest.
  • Down 2-0 with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the third inning, UTPB tied the game with an RBI-single through the right side by Brent Rigtrup and an RBI-walk by Makai DeSoto.
  • Rigtrup then gave the Falcons the lead with a two-run double to right center field with one out in the fifth inning.
  • Then with two outs, the floodgates opened as Bode Stewart hit an RBI-single to right center field and Dayton Osborn hit a two-run single also to right center before the final two runs of a seven-run inning scored on an error at shortstop on a ball hit off the bat of Jack Haggerty.
  • The final three runs came just one inning later as Rigtrup and DeSoto walked to lead things off and then Wiki DeLeon brought them both home with a two-RBI double. The final run came courtesy of a fielder's choice off the bat of Osborn scoring DeLeon.
  • Rigtrup and Osborn both finished 2-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored. DeLeon was also 2-for-4 while Stewart was 2-for-3.
  • Senior Nolan LaChappa (2-2) earned his second win in a row and pitched 6.1 innings allowing two hits and two runs while walking three and striking out 10.

Game 2 (UTPB 9, CU 6):
  • UTPB led 4-0 after an inning and a half and then trailed 6-4 after five innings before both tying the game and taking the lead back with a four-run seventh inning
  • Kaleb Scull led off the game with a single through the right side and then with one out, Carson Johnson singled through the right side as well. After leading the Falcons in game one, Rigtrup picked up where he left off and delivered a two-run single to right center to make it 2-0 Falcons in the first inning.
  • It was then Johnson who made it 4-0 in the second inning with a two-run single himself to left center field.
  • Timmy LaChappa got a swinging strikeout to leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth and preserve a one-run lead (4-3), but was unable to hold the lead in the fifth inning after issuing back-to-back one-out walks and then allowing a three-run home run for the second three-run inning of the game for Cameron.
  • Johnson's second RBI-hit of the game, a single up the middle with one out, cut UTPB's deficit to one (6-5) in the top of the sixth inning, and then after a scoreless bottom of the sixth pitched by Samuel Skipper, UTPB struck the killer blow in the top of the seventh.
  • After a one-out double by DeLeon in the top of the seventh, Taylor McDaniel brought him home with an RBI-single up the middle to tie the game (6-6). Then with two runners on base with two outs, Scull delivered a huge two-run triple to right center field to give the Falcons back the lead (8-6). Haggerty added an insurance run with an RBI-single to right center to score Scull.
  • Coming on in a save situation in the bottom of the seventh, Bryan Adams got a groundout to short, a swing-and-a-miss strike three and after a two-out walk, a groundout to second base to end it.
  • The offense in game two was led by the No. 3 hitter, Johnson, with a 3-for-5 effort featuring three RBI's. Scull was 2-for-4 with the go-ahead two-run triple and three runs scored from the top spot in the lineup while right behind him in the No. 2 spot, Haggerty was also 2-for-4 with an RBI-single in the final inning, making the top-three spots in the Falcons' lineup a combined 7-for-13 with six RBI's.
  • In the No. 9 spot, Osborn was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a walk. He was a combined 4-for-7 with five runs scored between both games on the day.
  • After drawing nine walks in game one, four Falcons were hit by a pitch in game two.
