LAREDO, Texas (February 4, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin women's golf hit the course for the first time since October and kicked off the Spring season at the annual Jack Brown Memorial, hosted by Texas A&M International, on Monday and Tuesday at the Laredo Country Club.

In the end, UTPB (339-325; 664; +88) finished with two players in the top-10 of the 37-player field but was sixth out of six teams.

"It was a great start to the Spring season," spoke UTPB Head Coach Paul Chavez. "Anytime you have two players finish in the top-10, you are doing some great things. Now we look forward to our next event and trying to improve as the season goes along. I am extremely proud of these young ladies."

Gabriela Maldonado (82-72; 154; +10) shot even-par during round two and improved her score by 10 strokes from one round to round two to finish in fifth place. She finished just two strokes out of first place.

"Gaby has been playing extremely well during qualifying and has shown signs of shooting par golf, and that was great to see today," said Chavez. "Moving forward, I expect her to put up some good numbers and to be a solid player throughout her final season."

Lorena Etxeberria (79-79; 158; +14) stayed in a tie for ninth place after both rounds of golf.

"Headed into the Spring season I really felt that Lorena would have a breakout season," added Chavez. "She is an extremely talented golfer, and when she puts it together, she can put up some really good scores."

Rounding out the players for UTPB was Ainhoa Gurruchaga (84-82; 166; +22) in a tie for 25th and Ella Veretto (94-92; 186; +42) in 36th.

Next up, UTPB will play Odessa College in a dual match on Thursday, February 6, at the Odessa Country Club.
