ODESSA, Texas (February 21, 2025) – Coming into the weekend needing to stack up some wins, The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team got off to a slow start in that regard with an 11-0 defeat in seven innings at home against St. Edward's University.
The UTPB pitching staff walked 11 batters and gave up 11 runs, the defense committed three fielding errors in the first three innings, and the offense finished with just two hits.
St. Edward's is off to an 11-3 start overall (10-3 Lone Star Conference), including a series sweep of Cameron University last weekend. The Hilltoppers are currently ranked fourth in the South Central Region, are the third team receiving votes in the latest NCBWA National Poll, and were ranked No. 23 nationally in the first NCAA Division II American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) in-season poll.
SEU's Kobe Jaramillo (4-0) earned the complete game shutout, did not issue a single walk, and struck out seven batters. Following Friday's performance, Jaramillo leads the LSC with 33 strikeouts on the season and is top-four in the nation.
UTPB (2-11 overall, 2-11 LSC) went down 1-2-3 to Jaramillo in the first inning, the third inning, the fifth inning, the sixth inning and the seventh inning. The final three outs were recorded on three straight strikeouts.
Jaramillo also got four lineouts into the outfield as the Falcons hit the ball hard on several occasions, but also hit it right at the defense.
The lone baserunners for UTPB were a two-out single by
Taylor McDaniel in the second inning and a one-out single by
Carson Johnson in the fourth, but neither runner would advance.
The Hilltoppers, meanwhile, took advantage of a two-out error in the top of the second inning to come up with a three-run home run to right field by the leadoff hitter, Trevor Sebek, charging three unearned runs to the ledger of starting pitcher
Trevor Barth (0-4).
Barth and the Falcons then stayed with it and were still in the ballgame until the top of the fifth inning when the Hilltoppers added a two-run homer again to right field, this time by the No. 3 hitter, Connor Cox. That was followed by a walk, a single and another walk, the third walk of the inning issued by Barth, to load the bases and bring in
Taven Hathaway to pitch.
Hathaway would walk in a run before getting a sacrifice fly and a groundout to get out of the fifth inning with a 7-0 score, but SEU would put up four runs on two hits for the second inning in a row in the sixth.
The sixth inning for the Hilltoppers featured a hit by pitch by the new pitcher,
Sebastian Lozoya, to load the bases and a balk to score a run. Two more runs would later score on a wild pitch by Lozoya, making it 11-0.
Games two and three of the series between UTPB and St. Edward's will be at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, on Saturday, February 22, from Roden Field.
