ODESSA, Texas (November 1, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin women's soccer team's Senior Day was spoiled by St. Mary's University, 3-0, on a cold Saturday at the UTPB Soccer Field. It was the final match for seniors
Ilaya Pata,
Natalia Salas and
Maria Tarrago, who were each honored prior to kickoff along with Graduate Assistant Coach
Chloe Fell.
In addition to Senior Day, it was the final match of the season for UTPB, which wrapped up year one of the
Garrett Kull era 3-10-3 overall and 2-10-2 in the Lone Star Conference.
Playing with the wind at its back in the first half, UTPB started the match with a corner kick by Tarrago and a shot on goal by Pata.
UTPB junior goalkeeper
Valeria Delgado made her first save of the match in the 22nd minute, but in the 28th minute, the Rattlers' Elena Kossler showed off her shiftiness and athleticism on a shot that just missed wide left. Kossler would then break through in the 37th minute, scoring on a header on a cross from Ana Parra.
Earlier this week, Kossler, a 26-year-old junior, was named both the LSC Offensive Player of the Week and the D2CIDA Women's Soccer National Player of the Week after tying the school record with four goals and earning the second-highest point total (9) in a single match in school history against Eastern New Mexico University (Oct. 26) last weekend. Her nine-point outing was also the highest single-match total in the LSC this season. Kossler then continued to rack up the points, assisting on all three goals for the Rattlers in their most recent win vs. Texas A&M International University (Oct. 29).
UTPB would fire two shots on goal in the final 70 seconds of the first half as Salas and
Molly King both put one on frame.
StMU made it 2-0 in the 77th minute when Kossler got loose near the end line and drew the attention of
Ella Bertram on defense, allowing Shelby Paniagua to peel back into the box and score the wide open goal that just skimmed off the hands of Delgado.
After adding both a goal and an assist to her season totals in the match against the Falcons, Kossler improves her point total for the season to 32.
The final goal came in the 81st minute when a corner kick by Marily Garza Contreras found its way untouched through the box and into the far side of the goal.
Salas missed wide right in the 86th minute and led the Falcons with two shot attempts in the match. In addition, all three seniors got to take one corner kick in the match.
Delgado would finish with four saves before giving way to transfer goalkeeper
Parker Frei, who made her UTPB debut in goal for the final five minutes.
In addition to being the most goals allowed in a match this season, it was the end of UTPB's attempt to become the first team in program history to finish the season without giving up three goals in a single match.
However, the Falcons did set a new program record for goals allowed and goals-against average in a single season. UTPB carried a 1.00 goals-against average heading into the final week of the season and in the end, allowed 19 goals for a 1.19 goals-against average. That broke the previous records of 23 goals allowed in both 2022 and 2024 and a 1.35 goals-against average set just last season (2024).
UT Permian Basin women's soccer has concluded the 2025 season and will be back in action next Fall.
