Meet
Maria Tarrago a senior who is majoring in Chemical Engineering and is a member of the UTPB women's soccer team. Tarrago identifies as Latina, which is important to her because of how it connects her to her family.
"This aspect is important to me because it connects me to my family, my culture, and the values I grew up with," said Tarrago. "Being from Guatemala, I carry a sense of pride in my heritage, language, and traditions."
Over the years, Tarrago has celebrated her identity by the celebration of holidays and festivals.
"I grew up celebrating holidays and festivals such as Día de la Independencia, Christmas with posadas, and Semana Santa," said Tarrago. "Also, by sharing traditional foods like tamales, atol and other delicious food."
One of the things Tarrago loves most about UTPB is the strong sense of community and support she has found here.
"As a student-athlete, I've been able to grow academically while also playing soccer. Professors and staff care about helping students succeed, and the smaller campus environment makes it easier to build close relationships with classmates, teammates, and mentors," said Tarrago. "I also appreciate the opportunities UTPB gives me to get involved in leadership roles, such as being an RA and professional development, which make me feel prepared for my future."
