Falcons Fall in Thrilling LSC Final

UTPB now awaits their postseason fate

LUBBOCK, Texas - In a back-and-forth battle for the Lone Star Conference crown the University of Texas baseball team fell in extra innings to Lubbock Christian, 10-8, at Hays Field in Lubbock, Texas. The Falcons needed to win two games on Saturday to capture their first LSC title in program history.

Jack Haggerty, Ethan Flodstrom, and Gibrian Pena led the offense with two hits each. Flodstrom drove in a pair while Pena scored twice. The top five in the order had eight of the 11 Falcon hits and scored six of the team's eight runs.

The Falcon offense started with a bang. Haggerty led things off with a single and moved to third on a Mason Hamlin double. Flodstrom tripled down the right-field line for the 2-0 lead. Austin Hall followed with an RBI single and the Falcons were up by three. An error by the right fielder allowed Hall to score before a Caleb Boswell sac fly brought in another run for the 5-0 lead.

The score remained 5-0 until the fifth when the Chaps plated three to make it a two-run game. They added another run in the sixth before weather came prompting a nearly four-hour delay.

After the delay, Carson Johnson got the offense going with a two-out single. After stealing second, he scored on a base hit by Haggerty and the Falcons led 6-4.

Two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth suddenly put Lubbock Christian ahead at 7-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Johnson reached on an error before a walk to Haggerty put two-on with nobody out. Hamlin bunted them over to put runners in scoring position with only one out. Johnson scored to tie the game on a wild pitch but that's all UTPB could push across as the Chaps escaped a bases loaded jam to end the inning.

The score was tied at seven heading into the 12th when the Chaps plated three to retake the lead, but the Falcons weren't done yet. Pena doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. Brandon Glowacki brought him in with a ground ball to make it 10-8. The Falcons would get runners on the corners with two outs before a fly ball to centerfield ended the game.

The Falcons will wait to hear their name called in tomorrow's NCAA selection show beginning at 9:30 p.m.
