ODESSA, Texas - It was a record-setting performance by the University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team on Tuesday against Sul Ross State at Roden Field. The Falcons beat the Lobos, 34-2, for their ninth straight win, the longest in program history set in 2009.
Â
The Falcons shattered their previous highwater mark for most runs in a game, 24, and came within two of tying the Lone Star Conference run record. The team had 26 hits, a school record, and a record with 11 doubles. Scoring five times each,
Mason Hamlin and
Ethan Flodstrom tied Jack Miller's single-game record, set in 2016 against Sul Ross State.
Â
The Lobos put up a run in the top of the first before the Falcons responded in their half of the inning. Flodstrom scored a pair on a double before scoring on a ground ball by
Gibrian Pena.
Â
Two walks and a single loaded the bases in the second for UTPB. They'd score on a wild pitch and a ground ball for the 5-1 lead. Hamlin and Flodstrom followed with back-to-back doubles to score two more. Two batters later, Pena crushed a two-run home run for the eight-run lead. A single and three walks plated another run, and the lead was 10-1.
Â
They added to the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by
Caleb Boswell before
Payton Matthews' grand slam made it 15-1. The offense continued in the fourth. Flodstrom singled home a run before
Austin Hall doubled in a pair. Boswell hit a three-run home run to make it 21-1. Later in the inning singles by Hamlin and Flodstrom would score two more.
Â
Jack Haggerty's hit by pitch broke the school record for runs in the game as part of a nine-run fifth to make it 32-1.
Brandon Glowacki capped the day with a two-run double in the sixth before the Lobos scored in the top of the seventh.
Â
Graeme Rios earned the win, allowing one run over three innings.
Nolan LaChappa,
Jaden Wilcox, and
Drew Wenske allowed just one run on one hit in relief.
Â
The Falcons hit the road this weekend to face UT Tyler in a four-game series starting Friday, April 12.
