Falcons Clinch No. 4 Seed with Extra Inning Win

UTPB took the series three games to four against the Eagles

EDMOND, Oklahoma - The University of Texas Permian Basin capped off the regular season with a 10-9 extra-inning victory over Oklahoma Christian on Sunday. The win was number 30 on the year for the Falcons as they locked up the fourth seed in next week's Lone Star Conference Championships.

The Falcons fell behind early as the Eagles put up four runs in the first inning. In the fourth, the Falcons finally got on the board thanks to a sacrifice fly by Jack Haggerty to make it 4-1. A run by the Eagles in the bottom of the inning made it a four-run game but in the fifth, a sacrifice fly by Gibrian Pena made it 5-2.

The score remained there until the seventh. Clayton Coats' two-out single drove home Pena and two batters later Carson Johnson walked with the bases loaded to make it a one-run game.

UTPB entered the ninth down 6-4 before their offense rallied. Batting with the bases loaded and one out, Haggerty tied the score on a double to right center field. Two batters later, Ethan Flodstrom put the Falcons on top 7-6 with an RBI single. The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out single, sending it to extra innings.

The Falcons loaded the bases for Johnson who doubled to left field to bring home two runs. Later in the inning, Hamlin's fielder's choice allowed another run to score putting UTPB ahead 10-7. The Eagles threatened in their half of the inning, scoring two runs and having the tying run on third with one out. Nolan LaChappa came in and shut the door, striking out both batters he faced to hang on for the win.

UTPB advanced to the opening round of the LSC Championships beginning Friday. They'll host UT Tyler at Roden Field beginning Friday at 3 p.m. in a best-of-three series.
