UTPB Wraps Up Weekend in Wild Back and Forth Battle

The teams combined to score 23 runs on 33 hits

TYLER, Texas - The University of Texas Permian Basin ended their four-game series at UT Tyler in a wild back-and-forth affair that ended with the Patriots on top, 12-11.

Jack Haggerty, Austin Hall, Gibran Pena, Brent Rigtrup, and Clayton Coats all had two hits on the day. Haggerty had a team-high three RBI while Payton Matthews and Carson Johnson had a pair of RBI each. Jalen Johnson struck out three in 2.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

The Patriots started the day with three in the bottom of the first. Hall got the Falcons going in the second after reaching on an error to open the inning. Pena singled to move him to second before Brent Rigtrup attempted a sac bunt. Rigtrup's bunt more than worked, as the ball was thrown away allowing Hall to score. Coats singled to make it a 3-2 deficit. Later in the inning, Haggerty drove him a pair on a single up the middle to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead.

The score remained there until the Patriots scored four in the fifth to lead 7-4. UTPB started the sixth with a walk and back-to-back singles to load the bases. Rigtrup beat out an infield single and plated a run to make it 7-5. A Matthews sac fly made it a one-run ball game and left runners in scoring position. Back-to-back singles by Johnson and Haggerty scored two and put UTPB ahead 8-7.

Trailing 10-8 in the eighth, the Falcons opened the inning with a pair of singles. Matthews brought home a run on a single before Johnson's fielder's choice tied the game at 10. A run by the Patriots in the eighth put them back on top with three outs to go. With two-on and one-out, a throwing error allowed Ethan Flodstrom to score and once again tie the score at 11. In the bottom of the ninth, the Patriots recorded three hits to walk it off for the win.

The Falcons are back home for a four-game set with the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith beginning Friday, April 19.
