Falcons Pull Off Thrilling Win Over Patriots

FRISCO, Texas – It went right down to the very end as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team (24-6) beat UT Tyler (Receiving Votes) (25-8) 70-68 in a Lone Star Conference Tournament Semi-final game, Saturday night at Comerica Center.

This is the first time that UT Permian Basin has advanced to the Lone Star Conference Championship game.  It's the Falcons first conference final appearance in nine years (Heartland Conference – 2014-15).

For the first almost five minutes, UTPB and UT Tyler went back-and-forth on the scoreboard.  Down 8-6 with 5:03 to go, the Patriot scored nine straight points to make it 15-8 at the 3:47 mark.  UTT led by four to seven points the rest of the period.

In the second period, down 21-15 at the 7:47 mark, UT Permian Basin made its move.  Sophomore Makala Bingley hit a tough shot in the paint.

That started a 15-3 run to put UTPB up 30-24 with 2:18 left.  The Falcons led the rest of the period.

In the third period, UT Tyler began to chip away.  The Patriots took the lead back with 27 seconds to go.  Graduate student Alexus Quaadman hit a bucket with 10 seconds left to put UT Permian Basin up 46-45 going into the last period.

The final period was just a battle as only once was the lead, either way, more than four points.  UTT looked to be in control, up 65-61 with 2:33 to go.

Bingley dropped in a bomb from the Jersey Shore to close to 65-64 at the 2:11 mark.  She hit two free throws with 1:36 left to put UTPB up 66-65.

Tied at 66, graduate student Kamryn Lemon hit two charity tosses to make it 68-66, Falcons with 46 seconds left.  Eight seconds later, UT Tyler scored to tie it once again.

The Falcons pushed the ball down court quickly and senior Andreea Mancha hit a jumper in the paint.  That put UT Permian Basin up 70-68 with 31 seconds to go.

The Patriots worked for the last shot.  UTT missed a 3-pointer, got the rebound and saw the second chance shot fall short in front of the buzzer.

For UT Permian Basin, Lemon had 28 points, two steals and was 10-of-19 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the line while Mancha scored 15 points with two triples.  On the boards, sophomore Khiara Flugence had nine rebounds while Quaadman pulled down eight.

Quaadman pushes her career rebound total to 1004, the first UTPB player, male or female to reach that mark.  Quaadman is also the first player, male or female, in UTPB history to have 1000 points and 1000 rebounds.
