Falcons Split Up Hilltoppers

AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team (12-11, Lone Star Conference, 12-11) split with St. Edward's (9-10 LSC, 9-12), Saturday afternoon at Lucian Hamilton Field.  The Falcons won the first game 7-6 and SEU took the nightcap 10-2.

Game 1
After two innings, St. Edward's had a 2-1 lead.  In the third inning, junior Carson Johnson singled and with aggressive running went to third on a ground ball.

The Hilltoppers misplayed a ground ball allowing Johnson to score to make it 2-2.  SEU came back with three runs in the bottom half to go up 5-2. 

Heading into the seventh inning, UT Permian Basin trailed 6-3.  Johnson reached first base on an error by St. Edward's.  Junior Jack Haggerty drew a walk before the bats came alive.

Sophomore Mason Hamlin singled to load the bases up.  Senior Ethan Flodstrom hit a single to score Johnson and Haggerty.

Senior Austin Hall singled to score Hamlin and Flodstrom ended the scoring off a double by junior Gibrian Pena.

In the bottom of the seventh, junior Brock Robarts came in on the mound and got a ground out, strikeout and a ground out for his sixth save of the season.

For UT Permian Basin, Hall had three hits and freshman Caleb Boswell and Flodstrom drove in two runs each. Junior Jaden Wilcox (1-1) gave up two hits, one run and struck out one in three innings.  

For St. Edward's, Luke Negrete (0-2) gave up two hits, four runs with three earned and walked one.  He faced four batters and did not get an out.

Game 2
St. Edward's scored six runs in the first inning to effectively seal the game.

For UT Permian Basin, freshman Victor Perez had two hits. Junior Isaias Espiritusanto (1-3) gave up one hit, three runs and walked one.  He faced three batters and did not get an out.  

For St. Edward's, Jakub Rayfield (3-0) gave up six hits, two runs with one earned, walked one and struck out three in seven innings.

UT Permian Basin closes the series with St. Edward's, Sunday, Mar. 10.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
