UTPB Suffers Heartbreak On The Road

AUSTIN, Texas – It was a heartbreaker as The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team (12-12, Lone Star Conference, 12-12) lost 7-6 to St. Edward's (10-10 LSC, 10-12), Sunday afternoon at Lucian Hamilton Field.

After five innings, the game was tied at 1-1.  In the sixth inning, junior Jack Haggerty singled and moved to third on a single from freshman Caleb Boswell.  Junior Ethan Babcock-Barrie laid down a perfect bunt single that scored Haggerty and moved Boswell to second.

Junior Payton Matthews hit a ground ball that was misplayed by St. Edward's.  When the dust settled, Babcock-Barrie and Boswell had scored and Matthews was on second.

Matthews went to third on a sac bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Mason Hamlin.  In the eighth inning, Matthews walked, stole second and scored on a double by Hamlin.

That put UTPB up 6-1.  The Hilltoppers scored six runs over the last two innings to pull off the win.

For UT Permian Basin, Babcock-Barrie, Boswell and Hamlin had two hits each. Junior Brock Robarts (0-2) gave up two hits, four runs, walked two and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning.

For St. Edward's, George Hettrick (1-0) struck out three batters in one and one-third innings.

UT Permian Basin returns home, Friday, Mar. 15 playing West Texas A&M.  The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
