PORTALES, New Mexico - The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team erupted for 16 runs and a season-high 18 hits in a 16-8 victory over Eastern New Mexico in the series finale.
Â
Ethan Flodstrom,
Austin Hall,
Clayton Coats, and
Carson Johnson all had three hits each. Coats led the way with five RBI while Flodstrom and Hall each drove in three. Flodstrom, Hall, Coats, Johnson,
Jack Haggerty, and
Mason Hamlin all had multiple hits on the day.
Â
Neither side pushed a run across until the top of the third. Hamlin led off the inning with a double to center field and two batters later, Hall drove him in with a single. In their half of the inning, the Greyhounds tied the score on a sac fly.
Â
That remained the score until the fifth. Hamlin started the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a base hit by Flodstrom. Hall put the Falcons on top with a sac fly to make it 2-1.
Gibrian Pena and
Brent Rigtrup worked back-to-back walks on a full count to load the bases. On the very next pitch, Coats hammered it to left centerfield for a grand slam and a 6-1 lead. The home side bounced back in the bottom of the inning with three runs to make it 6-4.
Â
UTPB added an insurance run in the sixth with a double by Flodstrom to bring home Haggerty. In the seventh, the Falcons broke the game open. Coats worked a lead-off walk and
Payton Matthews followed with a single. They would both score on a triple off the bat of Johnson to make it 9-4. Haggerty brought him home with a ground ball and a six-run lead.Â
Â
The score stayed there until the ninth when both offenses broke out. Haggerty brought home Johnson with a double to left before scoring on a single by Hamlin. Flodstrom brought him home with a two-run home run to left on the first pitch he saw to make it 14-4. Two pitches later, Hall homered to left field to extend the lead. Coats added to the lead with a single later in the inning to go up 16-4. The Greyhounds struck for four runs in their half of the ninth, but it was much too late as
Brock Robarts shut the door on any comeback attempts.
Â
The Falcons return home to host Cameron in a four-game series beginning Thursday, March 28.
