UTPB Falls In Slugfest With Chaparrals

LUBBOCK, Texas – Junior Clayton Coats had three hits as The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team (3-2, Lone Star Conference, 3-2) lost 9-7 to Lubbock Christian (5-0 LSC, 5-0), Thursday evening at Hays Field.

In the second inning, UTPB loaded the bases with one out.  The Falcons used a walk and a ground ball to score two runs.  Lubbock Christian would score twice in the bottom half.

In the third inning, sophomore Cooper Ciesielski blasted a solo shot over the left center field wall to put UT Permian Basin back up 3-2.  The Chaparrals scored three in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead.

In the fourth inning, senior Austin Hall singled followed by a home from Coats down the left field line to make it 5-5.  Once again, LCU would answer with two runs in the bottom half.

In the sixth inning, Hall doubled to right center field and scored on a single by Coats.  Junior Payton Matthews reached on a fielder's choice that forced Coats.  Matthews went to third on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on a ground out by junior Carson Johnson.

Lubbock Christian scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 9-7 lead.  In the ninth, the Falcons had two runners on with one out.  The Chaparrals got a fielder's choice and strikeout to end the game.

For UTPB, Coats had three hits, scored two runs and drove in three runs.  Junior Jaden Wilcox (0-1) gave up five hits, four runs with three earned, walked one and struck out two in two innings.  

For Lubbock Christian, Aydan Alger (2-0) gave up 10 hits, seven runs with six earned, walked one and struck out two in five innings.  Coleson Abel (1) picked up the save giving up three hits, walked one and struck out five in four innings.

UT Permian Basin remains on the road, Friday, Feb. 9 playing Lubbock Christian.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
