Falcons Sweep Away Chaparrals

LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team (5-2 Lone Star Conference, 5-2) dug deep to sweep Lubbock Christian (5-2 LSC, 5-2) 8-5 and 12-11, Friday at Hays Field.

Game 1
Lubbock Christian struck first, scoring three runs in the third inning.  In the fourth inning, sophomore Mason Hamlin reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.  Hamlin moved to third on a  fly out and scored on a single by senior Austin Hall.

Junior Gibrian Pena walked; then junior Clayton Coats cleared the bases with a double.  That made it 3-3.

In the fifth inning, the Falcons used three hits, a walk and a hit batter to score five runs to effectively seal the game.

For UTPB, Coats had two hits and drove in four runs.  Senior Creede Jeffers (1-1) gave up eight hits, five runs, walked one and struck out four in 4.7 innings.  

For Lubbock Christian, Chris Rhoades (1-1) gave up four hits, eight runs with seven earned, walked three and struck out one in 4.3 innings.

Game 2
After four innings, Lubbock Christian looked to be in the driver's seat with an 8-2 lead.  In the fifth, UTPB used three hits, three walks and two wild pitches to put up five runs on the board to make it 8-7.

The Chaparrals got one back in the bottom half.  In the sixth inning, Hamlin walked and scored on a double by senior Ethan Flodstrom.  Following an out , junior Ethan Babcock-Barrie ripped a single to right field to score Flodstrom and make it 9-9.

In the bottom of the sixth, LCU scored twice to put the pressure on the Falcons heading into the seventh and final inning.

UT Permian Basin drew a walk, single and walk to load the bases with no outs.  Hamlin grounded out to second, moving the runners each one base and closed the gap to 11-10.  Flodstrom smashed a single to right field to clear the bases.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lubbock Christian had runners at first and second with two outs.  Junior Brock Robarts struck out the batter to end the game.

For UTPB, junior Jack Haggerty had three hits and scored three runs while Flodstrom and Hamlin drove in three runs each.  Junior Bryan Adams (1-0) gave up three hits, two runs, walked one and struck out three in one inning.  Robarts (2) picked up the save giving up one hit, walked one and struck out two in one inning.  

For Lubbock Christian, Jacob Gutierrez and Carson Ogilvie had three hits each.  Colton Brown (0-1) gave up one hit, three run, walked two and did not get an out to start the seventh.

UT Permian Basin closes the series with Lubbock Christian, Saturday, Feb. 10.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
