UTPB Storms From Behind For Victory

LUBBOCK, Texas – Senior Ethan Flodstrom, sophomore Mason Hamlin and junior Payton Matthews had multiple hits as The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team (6-2, Lone Star Conference, 6-2) beat Lubbock Christian (5-3 LSC, 5-3) 14-10, Saturday afternoon at Hays Field.

The first inning looked more like a pinball game.  UTPB scored six runs in the top half and Lubbock Christian scored five in the bottom half.  The Chaparrals scored five in the bottom of the second inning for a 10-6 lead.

The Falcons would shut down LCU the rest of the way giving up just five hits and no runs over the last eight innings.

UT Permian Basin chipped away getting two runs in the fifth and one each in the sixth and eighth innings.  In the bottom of the ninth, Lubbock Christian had two runners on with one out.  UTPB got a fly out and ground out to force extra innings.

In the tenth, junior Carson Johnson singled and stole second.  Johnson moved to third on a single by junior Jack Haggerty.  Haggerty stole second and junior Gibrian Pena drew a walk.

A fielder's choice from Hamlin scored Johnson and moved Haggerty and Pena up a base.  Freshman Victor Perez hit a ground ball that forced Haggerty out at the plate.

Senior Austin Hall smacked a double through the right side to score Pena and Hamlin and push Perez to third.  Following a walk, a ground out scored Perez to make it 14-10.  Junior Brock Robarts took the mound in the bottom of the 10th and put the Chaparrals down 1-2-3.

For UTPB, Hamlin had three hits with two doubles, scored four runs and drove in three runs while Flodstrom and Matthews had two hits each.  Junior Bryan Adams (2-0) gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one in two innings.

For Lubbock Christian, Jarred Gibson and Carson Ogilvie had four hits each.  Murphy Bostick (0-1) gave up five hits, four runs, walked one and struck out three in four innings.
