UTPB Splits With Rattlers

ODESSA, Texas – Sophomore Cooper Ciesielski, senior Ethan Flodstrom and junior Gibrian Pena had three hits each as The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team (2-1, Lone Star Conference, 2-1) split with St. Mary's (Texas) (1-2 LSC, 1-2), Saturday afternoon at Roden Field.  SMU won the first game 8-6 and the Falcons took the nightcap 4-2.

Game 1

St. Mary's struck first scoring twice in the second inning.  In the bottom half, Pena smacked a single into right field.  The fielder misplayed the ball and Pena raced around the bases to score.  That made it 2-1.

UTPB was down 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth.  The Falcons would score three runs to close the gap to 6-4.

The Rattlers scored two runs in the sixth inning for an 8-4 lead.  In the bottom of the sixth, a double and two walks loaded the bases for UT Permian Basin.

Junior Carson Johnson walked to push in a run which was followed by a fielder's choice.  That scored a run and made it 8-6.  In the bottom of the seventh, UTPB had a runner on third with one out.  SMU got the next two batters to end the game.

For UTPB, Ciesielski, Flodstrom and Pena had two hits each.  Senior Creede Jeffers (0-1) gave up nine hits, five runs, walked one and struck out five in 3.3 innings.  

For St. Mary's, Andrew Girod (1-0) gave up one hit, walked one and struck out four in two innings.

Game 2

In the second inning for UTPB, senior Austin Hall double with two outs.  Ciesielski singled up the middle to score Hall and make it 1-0.

St. Mary's  would come back to tie the game in the third inning.  In the bottom half, sophomore Mason Hamlin reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a hit from junior Jack Haggerty.

In the fourth, freshman Caleb Boswell doubled and went to third on a sacrifice bunt.  Ciesielski was hit by a pitch and Hamlin reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.  Johnson singled to score Boswell and Ciesielski.

In the each of the last three innings, the Rattlers had at least one base runner on.  The Falcons got key defensive plays to keep them from scoring.

For UTPB, Boswell and Johnson had two hits each.  Junior Jalen Johnston (1-0) gave up two hits, one run and struck out two in 1.3 innings.  Junior Brock Robarts gave up one hit and struck out one in the seventh inning for the save.

For St. Mary's, Kaleb Gauna (0-1) gave up seven hits, four runs, walked one and struck out two in 3.3 innings.

UT Permian Basin closes the series with St. Mary's, Sunday, Feb. 4.  The game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
