Falcons Send The Pioneers Back East

DENTON, Texas – It was a total team effort as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team (Receiving Votes) (16-4 Lone Star Conference, 21-5) beat #7 / #8 Texas Woman's (19-2 LSC, 25-4) 51-47, Saturday afternoon at Kitty Magee Arena.

This is the second straight year that the Falcons have beaten a top 10 ranked team, and third in program history.  They beat the Pioneers (then #4) 69-57 on Feb. 18, 2023. 

The win snapped TWU's 15-game winning streak.  It was also the 21st win of the season by UT Permian Basin tying the school record set in 2010-11 and 2012-13.

The first quarter saw UTPB and Texas Woman's trading buckets the whole way.  Down 8-7 entering the second period, the Falcons jumped out to a 16-9 lead at the 5:48 mark.  UT Permian Basin would lead by three to seven points the rest of the period.

The Pioneers closed the gap in the first two minutes of the third period and the squads battled the rest of the period.

In the fourth period, TWU turned the tables with a 7-2 run to lead 40-35 with 7:59 left.  UTPB got to work going on a 14-4 burst.

That put the Falcons up 49-44 at the 1:50 mark.  Texas Woman's closed to two points, 49-47.  Senior Andreea Mancha hit two free throws with seven seconds left to seal the game.

Defense was the name of the game as the Falcons held the Pioneers to 34% from the floor and 18.2 % from behind the arc.  UTPB had 19 more rebounds including 30 defensive boards to just seven offensive for TWU.

For UT Permian Basin, graduate student Kamryn Lemon had 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals, Mancha scored nine points and senior Holly Hemmeline had eight points.

For Texas Woman's, Leila Patel had 16 points.

UT Permian Basin closes the home season, Wednesday, Feb. 28 playing Angelo State.  The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
