UTPB Splits It Up With Rams

ODESSA, Texas – Freshman Caleb Boswell, senior Austin Hall and junior Gibrian Pena had three hits each as The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team (Receiving Votes) (7-4, Lone Star Conference, 7-4) split with #3 Angelo State (8-3 LSC, 8-3), Saturday afternoon at Roden Field.  The Rams won the first game 24-7 and the Falcons took the nightcap 4-3.

Game 1
Angelo State took a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning.  Junior Clayton Coats walked and moved to second on a double by senior Brent Rigtrup.

Pena crushed a double to left center field to score Coats and Rigtrup.  Pena moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single from junior Jack Haggerty to tie the game at 3-3.

In the third inning, sophomore Mason Hamlin led off with a home over the left field fence.  With two outs, Rigtrup notched another double.  Pena had his second double of the game to score Rigtrup and make it 5-3.

The Rams score eight runs in the top of the fourth to effectively end the game.

For UTPB, Pena had three hits with two doubles and drove in three runs while Haggerty and Rigtrup had two hits each.  Senior Creede Jeffers (1-1) gave up 10 hits, ten runs with nine earned, walked three and struck out seven in three and two-third innings.  

For Angelo State, Scott Ellis (1-0) gave up four hits, one run, walked two and struck out three in four innings.

Game 2
The nightcap was a story of pitching as there were just 11 hits combined.  Angelo State took a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

Boswell and Hamlin led off with singles.  Following an out, Hall hit a bomb over the right center field fence to put the Falcons up 3-2.

In the sixth inning, Boswell singled and was replaced by pinch runner junior Quincy McGraw Jr.  A sacrifice bunt and ground out moved McGraw to third.  Hall was intentionally walked.  Hall got caught in a run down.  McGraw took advantage and scored just in front of the throw home.

In the seventh inning, the Rams got a home run with two outs.  The next batter was hit by a pitch.  Junior Brock Robarts got the following batter to hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.

For UTPB, Hall had two hits and drove in three runs and Boswell had two hits.  Junior Isaias Espiritusanto (1-0) gave up four hits, two runs, walked two and struck out eight in five and one-third innings.  Robarts (3) pitched one inning giving up a hit and a run for the save.

For Angelo State, Alezeah Gutierrez (2-1) gave up six hits, four runs and struck out five in five innings.

UT Permian Basin closes the series with Angelo State, Sunday, Feb. 18.  The game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
