Falcons Lose Thriller In 11 Innings

ODESSA, Texas – Freshman Caleb Boswell and junior Jack Haggerty had multiple hits as The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team (Receiving Votes) (6-3, Lone Star Conference, 6-3) lost 11-8 in 11 innings to #3 Angelo State (7-2 LSC, 7-2), Friday afternoon at Roden Field.

In the first inning, Haggerty drew a walk.  He then stole second and move to third when the throw went into the outfield.  Haggerty would score on a wild pitch to make it 1-0, UTPB.

Angelo State scored seven runs over the next three innings.  The Rams took an 8-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Falcons had bases loaded with two outs.  Junior Carson Johnson hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped.  Two runs scored with senior Brent Rigtrup at third and Johnson at first.

Freshman Victor Perez came in to run for Johnson.  A pass ball scored Rigtrup and moved Perez to second.  Haggerty ripped a single up the middle to score Perez and make it 8-5.

UT Permian Basin scored a run in the eighth to make it 8-6.  In the ninth inning, junior Payton Matthews doubled.  Following a strike out, Haggerty tripled down the right field line to score Matthews. 

After another out, sophomore Mason Hamlin singled through the right side to score Haggerty.  That sent the game into extra innings at 8-8.

In the tenth inning, ASU had two on with no outs.  The batter hit a line drive towards first base that senior Austin Hall made a great play out for an out.  Hall then touched first and fired to second to complete the triple play.

Angelo State scored three runs in the 11th inning.  In the bottom half, UTPB had runners at first and second with one out.  The Rams got the next two batters to end the game.

For UTPB, Haggerty had four hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs and Boswell had two hits.  Junior Brock Robarts (0-1) gave up two hits, two runs and walked two in one inning.  

For Angelo State, Jacob Guerrero and Ryder McDaniel had three hits each.  Johnny Stacy (1-0) gave up six hits, three runs, walked two and struck out five in three innings.  Clayton Broeder (1) struck out one in two-thirds of an inning.

UT Permian Basin stays home, Saturday, Feb. 17 taking on Angelo State.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
