UTPB Edges Past Mustangs

SILVER CITY, N.M. – It was a dramatic finish as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team (11-2 Lone Star Conference, 16-3) beat Western New Mexico (3-10 LSC, 8-12) 58-56, Thursday evening at Drag's Court.
 
UTPB scored the first five points of the game.  Western New Mexico came back with six in a row for a 6-5 lead.  The last five minutes of the first was back-and-forth.

The Falcons maintained a five to seven points lead most of the second period.  Down 29-22 at the 1:15 mark, the Mustangs scored the last six points.  That put UT Permian Basin up 29-28 at halftime.

Most of the second half was a tight affair with neither UTPB nor WNMU able to put the other team away.  Sophomore Khiara Flugence grabbed  a missed Falcon shot and scored with four seconds left in the fourth period.

That put UT Permian Basin up 58-56.  Western New Mexico's shot at the buzzer was short.

For UT Permian Basin, junior Morgan Helgesen had 15 points, eight rebounds and hit four triples while Flugence scored 10 points.

For Western New Mexico, Sydney Wright had 14 points and six assists.

UT Permian Basin stays on the road.  Saturday, Feb. 3 playing on Eastern New Mexico.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. MT 2:00 p.m. CST
