LAWTON, Okla. (December 14, 2024) – One week after scoring 38 points,
Taysha Rushton scored 11 points in a row and accounted for 13 points during a 20-0 Falcons' run during the third quarter as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team got back into the win column with a 64-57 road win at Cameron University on Saturday.
Starting with a 3-pointer by
Makala Bingley two and a half minutes into the game, UTPB (6-4 overall, 4-1 Lone Star Conference) scored 14 consecutive points to take a 17-5 lead after the third straight layup by
Nikki Green in the final minute and a half of the first quarter.
Cameron (2-5, 0-3) was 0-for-11 from the field during the Falcons' run in the first quarter, and after making its first two shots of the game, missed each of its next 13 shots to finish just 2-for-15 (13.33 percent) from the field in the opening period.
The Aggies would also miss their first three shots of the second quarter, while for UTPB, Bingley's second 3-pointer of the first half was followed by a pair of free throws by Green to give the Falcons a 13-point lead (24-11) just over a minute and a half into the period.
From there, however, Cameron began to find its offensive footing and made its next four shots, including two from 3-point range, accounting for a 10-2 run and cutting its deficit to just five points (26-21) at the second quarter media timeout (4:35).
Back to-back turnovers by the Falcons led to a pair of layups by the Aggies to make it a 3-point game (30-27) with two minutes left in the first half, but UTPB was able to close out the final minute with layups by both Green and
Natalie Milwood to take a 34-27 lead into halftime.
After shooting 58.33 percent as a team the second quarter, Cameron's Kennedy Cummings hit two 3-pointers and made three shots in a row to open the third quarter and pull the Aggies to within just one point (36-35) of the Falcons two minutes into the second half.
Rushton answered with a personal 6-0 run on a pair of free throws, a layup and then a midrange jumper to get the Falcons' lead back to seven points (42-35) two minutes later.
Rushton would add to her run with two more free throws and then an and-one to make it 47-35 Falcons approaching four minutes left in the third quarter.
After 11 straight points for Rushton, Bingley connected on her third 3-pointer of the game to make it a 15-point lead (50-35), and then Rushton added another layup to make it 52-35 with three minutes left in the quarter.
In addition to Rushton, another Falcon having a good day was Green, who hit a 3-pointer on the assist from Rushton to make it a 21-point game (56-35) with under a minute and a half left in the third period.
It was a 20-0 Falcon run that lasted for over seven and a half minutes and saw Cameron go 0-for-6 from the field with six turnovers.
Cameron responded with a 13-0 run between the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth to make it just an eight-point game (56-48) two and half minutes into the final period.
Rushton finally stopped the Cameron run with a jumper from the free throw line, and then another jumper from the free throw line, this time by Bingley, made it a 10-point game again (61-51) with five and a half minutes to play.
"I'm proud of our team for finishing the road trip with a win," said UTPB Head Coach
Rae Boothe. "We knew it would be a battle with Cameron. They always play hard and despite us getting up, they kept battling back. We have to improve on not getting comfortable at moments in games. To be 4-1 to start LSC play is a good place to be. We have a big in-region game before the break. We will now shift our focus to Colorado Springs."
After scoring just two points in the first half, Rushton scored 18 points in the second half and finished with 20. Bingley added 17 points and Green scored 13 points off the bench.
Cameron committed 26 turnovers and UTPB led 30-12 in points off turnovers, including a margin of 12-0 in the third quarter.
Before the Holiday Break officially begins, UTPB will have one more game at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Thursday, December 19.
