Women’s basketball empties the bench in easy victory

ODESSA, Texas (November 12, 2024) – Everybody got into the act as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team beat Arlington Baptist University 93-18 on Tuesday night at the Falcon Dome.

It was an exhibition game for Arlington Baptist while UTPB counted the game and improved to 2-1 on the season.

Last year during UTPB's record-breaking 2023-24 season, the Falcons reached the 90-point mark in a game four times.

Tonight's game marked a celebration of that historic season as the 2023-24 UTPB Women's Basketball NCAA Tournament Banner was unveiled, as was the jersey retirement for former Falcon Alexus Quaadman, who last season was named the 2023-24 Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Year and became the first basketball player at UTPB to reach both 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.

UTPB scored 74 bench points and was able to see all 15 members of its roster get into the game and enter the scoring column.

Freshman center Natalie Milwood recorded her first double-double and led a trio of Falcons in double-figure scoring as she finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds. She was 8-for-12 from the field and had six offensive rebounds as well.

Sophomore guard Mikalah Buckley scored 15 points on 70 percent shooting (7-10) while junior guard Kamari Portalis had 10 points. Both players finished with three assists.

Sophomore guard and newcomer Madison Walters scored nine points and secured six steals and freshman forward Taryn Johnson was 3-for-4 from three to score nine points as well.

Another freshman forward, Madyson Solis, scored six points but also reached double-digits in rebounds with 10 (5 offensive, 5 defensive).

Arlington Baptist had just four made field goals going into the fourth quarter while UTPB shot over 50 percent from the field in each of the final three periods.

UTPB also finished with 20 steals on 30 ABU turnovers and dished out 18 assists.

UTPB Head Women's Basketball Coach Rae Boothe said, "It was great to see some of our younger players get a lot of minutes tonight. They had a lot of positive moments. We will now shift our focus to areas that we need to improve upon to get ready for LSC action next week."

The Falcons will now have nearly a week and a half off as they await the start of Lone Star Conference action on Saturday, November 23 (1 p.m.), when UTPB welcomes Angelo State University into the Falcon Dome. The last time they played, UTPB defeated Angelo State by 20 points, 71-51, in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.
