UTPB Keeps Mustangs From Running Free

ODESSA, Texas – Junior Alex Matthews had a double-double as The University of Texas Permian Basin men's basketball team (5-2 Lone Star Conference, 10-3) knocked off Western New Mexico (1-5 LSC, 3-9) 90-70, Saturday afternoon at the Falcon Dome.

This is tied for the second-best start in program history.

For the first eight minutes, UTPB and Western New Mexico made the game look like a chess match, countering each other's moves.

Junior Maison Adeleye hit a bucket that started a run of seven straight points.  That put the Falcons up 19-10 at the 10:17 mark.

The Mustangs went back to the drawing board and began to chip away.  They cut the margin to two, 25-23 with 6:02 to go.  UT Permian Basin reeled off a 12-1 burst that effectively ended the game.

The Falcons generated a good number of points from their defense.  UTPB forced 20 turnovers and got 28 points for their effort.

For UT Permian Basin, Matthews had 32 points, 10 rebounds and shot 11-of-13 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the line.  Junior Zy Wright had 21 points and shot 8-of-16 from the floor and senior Keyon Craddock scored 12 points with eight assists.

Adeleye scored nine points to push his collegiate total to 1002 points.

For Western New Mexico, Cortaviaus Seales scored 18 points.

UTPB takes to the road Thursday, Jan. 11 when they play Lubbock Christian.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
