Falcons Nip Greyhounds In Photo Finish

ODESSA, Texas – Junior Maison Adeleye and graduate student Lathaniel Bastian had double-doubles as The University of Texas Permian Basin men's basketball team (4-2 Lone Star Conference, 9-3) took a thrilling 79-76 win over #26 Eastern New Mexico (4-1 LSC, 8-3), Thursday night at the Falcon Dome.

This is tied for the second best start in program history.

For the first seven minutes, UTPB and Eastern New Mexico just slugged it out.  Down 11-9, Adeleye hit a free throw which sparked a 16-4 run.  That put the Falcons up 25-15 at the 7:49 mark.

UT Permian Basin lead by nine, 37-28 with 2:46 to go.  The Greyhounds closed on a 7-1 run to trail 38-35 at halftime.

In the second half, UTPB would lead by four to six points, only to see ENMU close the gap.  Three times in the last four minutes, Eastern New Mexico tied the game.

The Greyhounds scored on a dunk with three seconds left to make it 77-76, Falcons.  Junior Alex Matthews was fouled and hit two free throws with two second on the clock to make it 79-76.  Matthews then stole the inbound pass to seal the game.

For UT Permian Basin, Bastian had 26 points, 14 rebounds and blocked five shots while Adeleye had 17 points and 10 rebounds.  This was Bastian sixth straight double-double and ninth of the season.  Matthews scored 12 points, had two steals and was 10-of-10 from the line.

For Eastern New Mexico, Jahcoree Ealy and Greg Johnson had 18 points apiece.

UTPB remains home Saturday, Jan. 6 when they host Western New Mexico.  The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
