Gilzynski Breaks Record For UTPB

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Junior Szymon Gilzynski broke a pool record for The University of Texas Permian Basin men's swimming & diving team on Day 2 of the Colorado College Classic, Saturday at Schlessman Natatorium.

UTPB has scored 643 points and lead Colorado College by 103.5 points.  Rounding out the top five are Colorado (3rd – 192.5 points), Midland (4th – 158 points) and Adams State (5th – 153 points).

The Falcons had 26 top eight finishes and won six events.  UT Permian Basin also went 1-2-3-4 in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard breaststroke.

Gilzynski swam 49.75 to win the 100 fly.  It was the fourth fastest time in school history.  Gilzynski broke the pool record of 49.83 which had stood for 21 years.

Additional first place finishes came from freshman Chase Alderman in the 200 breast (2:14.44), senior Trevor Heath in the 50-yard freestyle (21.70), senior Evan Siegrist in the 400-yard IM (4:12.49), the 400 free relay of Heath, freshman Colin Doyle, Gilzynski and sophomore Issac Velasquez (3:11.53) and the 200-medley relay of freshman Zane Garner, Alderman, Gilzynski and Heath (1:36.77).

Second place performances were earned by senior Daniel Bednarski in the 100-yard backstroke (53.44) and 200 free (1:44.94),  100 fly (52.05) and 400 IM (4:19.36), senior Matthew Lenzo on the 1M board (465.05 points), sophomore Owen Putnam in the 100 fly (53.20) and junior Nathan Powell in the 200 breast (2:19.42).

UT Permian Basin will wrap up the Colorado College Classic Sunday, Jan. 21.  The event is scheduled to run all day.
