UTPB Takes Down Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The University of Texas Permian Basin men's basketball team (6-5 Lone Star Conference, 11-6) dug deep in a 62-57 win over Midwestern State (5-6 LSC, 11-6), Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

For the first ten minutes of the game, UTPB and Midwestern State played a very strategic, methodical game.  Tied at 16-16 with 9:45 to go, the Mustangs went on a 10-2 run to lead 26-18 at the 7:47 mark. 

The Falcons outscored MSU 16-7 the rest of the half.  Junior Alex Matthews scored in traffic with 29 seconds left to put UT Permian Basin up 34-33 at halftime.

The second half was one of trading buckets for the first 11 minutes.  Graduate student Lathaniel Bastian scored a bucket to start a run of ten consecutive points.

That put UTPB up 55-46 with 5:39 left in the game.  Midwestern State closed the gap to 60-57 with 29 seconds left.  Senior Keyon Craddock hit two charity tosses with 20 seconds left to seal the game.

For UT Permian Basin, Matthews had 17 points, three steals and shot 7-of-10 from the floor, junior DJ Armstrong had 12 points, blocked two shots and hit four 3-pointers and Bastian had nine points, 13 rebounds and two steals.

For Midwestern State, Will Shepherd scored 19 points.

UTPB returns to the Falcon Dome Thursday, Jan. 25 taking on St. Edward's.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
