Falcons Get Nipped By Aggies

LAWTON, Okla. – It was a heartbreaking result as The University of Texas Permian Basin men's basketball team (5-5 Lone Star Conference, 10-6) lost 74-72 to Cameron (6-4 LSC, 10-6), Thursday night at Aggie Gymnasium.

At the 15:02 mark, junior DJ Armstrong dropped one from the east coast.  For the first four minutes of the game, UTPB and Cameron were trading buckets.

The Aggies began to chip away and tied the game at 28 at the 6:36 mark.  That started a 16-5 run to put the Falcons up 26-14 with 10 minutes left in the first half.

UT Permian Basin came back and junior Alex Matthews scored in the paint with 13 seconds left to make it 38-36 Aggies at the break.  Over the next eight minutes, Cameron pushed the lead to 10, 38-28 with 2:32 to go.

The last 10 minutes was like a seesaw with 11 ties and/or lead changes.  UTPB went up 54-48 at the 12:29 mark.  The first four minutes of the second half were similar to the start of the game.

Cameron tied the game at 72 with 43 second left and then hit the game-winner with four seconds left.  Graduate student Lathaniel Bastian crashed the paint and scored with 1:03 left to put the Falcons up 72-71.

They held the Aggies to just 29.2% from behind the arc.  UTPB shot well from the floor hitting 49% from the floor, 42.1% on 3-pointers and 93.3% on free throws.

For UT Permian Basin, Armstrong had 17 points and was 6-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-8 on triples, Bastian had 16 points, two steals and was 8-of-10 from the floor, junior Zy Wright had 14 points, three steals and was 9-of-9 from the line and Adeleye had 12 points and two steals.

For Cameron, Lavell Brodnex scored 24 points.

The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.  UTPB finishes the road trip Saturday, Jan. 20 taking on Midwestern State.
