Falcons Stampede Lady Buffs

CANYON, Texas – It was a total team effort as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team (6-2 Lone Star Conference, 11-3) beat West Texas A&M (4-4 LSC, 9-7) 66-53, Saturday afternoon at First United Bank Center.

The Falcons have tied the school record for best start at 11-3.  This was also the first win over the Lady Buffs since Nov. 14, 2014.

For the first five minutes of the game, UTPB and West Texas A&M slugged it out trading buckets.  Junior Avalon Munoz hit a jumper in the paint to tie the game at 6-6 with 5:40 to go.  Over the last five minutes, the Lady Buffs went on an 11-2 run to lead 17-8 at the end of the first period.

In the second period, WTAMU twice had a lead of 11 points.  West Texas A&M led 32-25 with 3:34 to go when the Falcons attacked.  Graduate student Alexus Quaadman hit a pair of charity tosses at the 2:59 mark.

Graduate student Kamryn Lemon hit a turnaround jumper to end the run with 1:15 to go.  When the period was over, UT Permian Basin had scored the last nine points and led 34-32 at the break.

In the first five minutes of the third period, UTPB went on an 11-2 run to lead 45-34 and never looked back.

The Falcons played tough defense allowing the Lady Buffs to shoot just 31% from the floor and 20.8% from behind the arc.  UTPB also pulled down 31 defensive rebounds to just nine offensive boards for WTAMU.

For UT Permian Basin, Lemon scored 13 points, sophomore Makala Bingley had 12 points with two 3-pointers, junior Morgan Helgesen had 11 points, eight rebounds, two steals and hit three triples and Quaadman had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Quaadman pushed her career point total to 901, the fifth player in program history to hit that mark.

For West Texas A&M, Zoey McBroom had 12 points.

UT Permian Basin keeps on traveling, Thursday, Jan. 18 playing Cameron.  The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
