UTPB Battles Tough Against Buffaloes

CANYON, Texas – Four players were in double figures for scoring as The University of Texas Permian Basin men's basketball team (5-4 Lone Star Conference, 10-5) lost 77-69 to #4 West Texas A&M (7-0 LSC, 13-1), Saturday afternoon at First United Bank Center.

For the first three minutes of the game, UTPB and West Texas A&M played a methodical game of basketball.  At the 16:18 mark, junior Alex Matthews scored off a fast break to get the Falcons going.

Graduate student Lathaniel Bastian tossed in a three-pointer from the east coast.  That ended a run of nine straight points putting UT Permian Basin up 12-5 with 15:06 to go.

The Buffaloes came back with seven straight to tie the game at 12 at the 12:07 mark.  From there, it was trading buckets until there were two minutes left in the first half.  WTAMU scored five points in the last minute to lead 39-34 at halftime.

In the second half, early on, UTPB and West Texas A&M slugged it out.  Junior Maison Adeleye cashed in his long-distance calling card.

That cut the margin to three, 48-45 with 15:47 to go.  The Buffaloes went on a 7-2 run over the next two minutes.  From there, WTAMU maintained an eight to 11 point until the final minute.

The Falcons brought in the shooting touch as they hit 52.3 from the floor and 47.1% on 3-pointers.

For UT Permian Basin, Adeleye had 17 points and two steals,  junior DJ Armstrong had 15 points, two steals and hit three 3-pointers and Bastian had 15 points, nine rebounds, two steals and blocked two shots.

For West Texas A&M, Larry Wise had 17 points and Ryland Holt scored 14.

UTPB keep to the road Thursday, Jan. 18 taking on Cameron.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
