Falcons Fly Past Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – It was an all-out war as The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (10-3, 1-1 Lone Star Conference) beat Midwestern State (3-12, 0-3 LSC) 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 29-27), Friday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.  This was the sixth straight win over the Mustangs.

In the first set, UTPB got off to a 4-1 start.  Midwestern State scored three straight points to make it 4-4.

From there, the teams were pretty much trading points until 23-22, Falcons.  Senior Gloria Geurin and junior Chyra Thompson recorded back-to-back kills to end the set.

In the second set, UT Permian Basin was in charge pretty much the whole way.  Down 22-16, MSU scored four straight to close to 22-20.  Freshman Mya Black and senior Cassandra Rother stuffed the hitter to start a three-point run to close the set.

In the third set, UTPB and Midwestern State went back-and-forth until 10-8.  The Falcons went on a 10-7 run to lead 20-15.

The Mustangs forged ahead 24-23.  The Falcons fought off set point twice.  Up 26-25, UT Permian Basin had match point three times.  At 28-27, UTPB forced an error to claim victory.

For UT Permian Basin, Geurin had 13 kills and 10 digs, junior Aaliyah Gray had nine kills and Thompson had eight kills while hitting .467.  Junior Gabby Gregorski had 24 digs.

For Midwestern State, Lauryn Bourne had 12 kills and 15 digs while Taygon Jones had 15 digs.

UT Permian Basin keeps to the road, Saturday, Sept. 30, taking on Texas Woman's.  The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
