UTPB Picks Up A Split

SAN ANGELO, Texas –The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (3-1) went 1-1 on the final day of the Kathleen Brasfield Invitational, Saturday at the Junell Center / Stephens Arena.  This is the second straight season that the Falcons have started 3-1.

Henderson State (2-2) – W, 3-2 (24-26, 25-20, 25-8, 25-27, 17-15)

In the first set, UTPB and Henderson State slugged it out early.  At 11-11, the Reddies went on a 9-4 run to lead 20-16.

The Falcons refused to quit and scored four straight to tie it at 20.  Down 24-22, freshman Mya Black crushed two straight sets to tie the score at 24-24.  HSU got two kills to go up 1-0.

The second set was much like the first with UT Permian Basin and Henderson State trading points. Leading 21-18, UTPB got a kill from senior Cassandra Rother and forced an error to take control.

In the third set, the Falcons scored the first seven points and never looked back.

In the fourth set, UT Permian Basin and the Reddies played a chess match for most of the set.  Down 24-21, senior Gloria Geurin smashed the ball straight down the middle, then served up three straight points to put the Falcons up 25-24.
HSU gritted its teeth and got three straight points to force a fifth set.

In that final set, UTPB and Henderson State once again traded points.  The Falcons led 14-11 before the Reddies tied it at 15-15.  Junior Chyra Thompson fired the ball down the line and UT Permian Basin forced an error to take the match.

For UT Permian Basin, Geurin had 21 kills, nine digs and six total blocks and junior Aaliyah Gray had 15 kills and 13 digs.  Junior Gabby Gregorski had 26 digs and Thompson had six total blocks.

Geurin had 64 hitting attempts, third best in school history.  As a team, the 71 kills was tied for third best.

For Henderson State, Vi Mendoza Quintana had 19 kills and 19 digs while Christiane Uzoh had 11 kills with six total blocks.

Angelo State (RV) (4-0) – L, 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-16)

In the first set, UTPB and Angelo State matched point for point virtually the entire way.  Junior April Egwu smashed the ball off the block to pull the Falcons to 24-23.  The Rambelles fired off a kill to take the set.

In the second set, ASU tried to put the Falcons away early getting to an 8-4 lead.  Black recorded a solo block to close out a 7-5 run, to make it 13-11.  Angelo State scored seven straight points to seal the set.

In the third set, UT Permian Basin was down 10-5 before starting a comeback.  Senior Logan Terrazas crushed the ball down the middle to make it 12-9.  The Rambelles went on a 5-2 run to seal the match.

For UT Permian Basin, Geurin hit .364 and Gregorski recorded nine digs.

For Angelo State, Hannah Kinnison had 13 kills and hit .367.

Named to the All-Tournament team was Gregorski and Geurin.  Gregorski averaged 5.15 digs per set with three service aces.  Geurin averaged 3.20 kills per set, had eight total blocks and hit .247.

UT Permian Basin will be hosting the Dr. Steve Aicinena "Iceman" Invitational, Thursday thru Saturday, Sept. 7-9.
