UTPB Roars From Behind To Down Eagles

LUBBOCK, Texas – It was a major rally as The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (9-1) beat Oklahoma Christian (6-4), 3-2 (23-25, 10-25, 25-23, 25-10, 20-18), Friday afternoon at Rip Griffin Center.  The Falcons have tied for the best start in school history.

In the first set, it was all Oklahoma Christian early on as it jumped to an 18-8 lead.  UTPB came storming back with a 15-5 burst.

The Falcons forced an error to tie the set at 23-23.  The Eagles picked up the next two points to take the set.

In the second set, OCU scored the first six points and were never challenged.

In the third set, Oklahoma Christian looked to be in charge with a 14-9 lead.  UT Permian Basin then went on a tear, 8-3 to tie the set at 17-17.

Junior Reann Cato served up two aces to put UTPB up 19-17.  The Falcons closed the set out when freshman Mya Black and Junior April Egwu stuffed the Eagle hitter to win the set.

In the fourth set, UT Permian Basin opened up 14-7 and were off to the races to force a fifth set.

In the final set, UTPB looked to bring it home with a 12-8 lead.  OCU came back with a 5-1 run to tie it at 13-13.

The Falcons and Oklahoma Christian traded points up to 18-18.  Juniors Aaliyah Gray and Chyra Thompson recorded kills to end the match.

For UT Permian Basin, Thompson had 12 kills and hit .647 with eight total blocks and Gray had 10 kills and nine digs.  Junior Gabby Gregorski collected 16 digs.  As a team, the Falcons had 13 aces, second best in school history.

For Oklahoma Christian, Annie Davis had 22 kills and Lauren McClure recorded 38 assists.  Brylie Berryman had 19 digs.

UT Permian Basin remains in Lubbock, Saturday, Sept. 16, taking on Texas Woman's.  The match is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
