Falcons Hold Off The Lady Chaparrals

LUBBOCK, Texas – Four players were in double figure kills as The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (8-1) beat Lubbock Christian (7-1), 3-2 (23-25, 25-15, 27-25, 19-25, 15-11), Thursday night at Rip Griffin Center.  This was the day 1 of the Lone Star Crossover.

In the first set, UTPB and Lubbock Christian played a tactical game.  The lead was never more than two at any given time.

Down 23-21, the Falcons got a kill from junior Aaliyah Gray and stuffed the Lady Chaparrals to make it 23-23.  LCU got the next two points to take the set.

In the second set, UT Permian Basin and Lubbock Christian again went toe-to-toe.  Up 12-10, senior Gloria Geurin rattled off a kill to start a 10-3 run to seal the game.

In the third set, UTPB looked to be in control, up 12-8.  The Lady Chaparrals scored four straight to tie it at 12-12.

The Falcons were up 24-23 and twice had set point, just to see LCU fight back.  At 25-25, junior Chyra Thompson and freshman Kennedi Wright recorded kills to take the set.

In the fourth set, UT Permian Basin and Lubbock Christian went back-and-forth once again.  The Lady Chaparrals were up 18-15 and scored three straights to take control.

In the fifth set, the Falcons stormed out to a 7-2 lead.  LCU came back with a 6-1 run to tie it at 8-8.  At 10-10, senior Devin Alcoser served up three straight points to seal the match.

For UT Permian Basin, Thompson had 12 kills and hit .526, Geurin had 11 kills and four total blocks and senior Logan Terrazas and Wright had 10 kills each.  Junior Gabby Gregorski collected 23 digs.

For Lubbock Christian, Kiana Fallaha had 19 kills and 12 digs while Payton Murray recorded 14 kills.

UT Permian Basin remains in Lubbock, Friday, Sept. 15, taking on Oklahoma Christian.  The match is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
