Falcons Soar High In San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, Texas – It was a team effort as The University of Texas Permian Basin volleyball team (2-0) swept on the first day of the Kathleen Brasfield Invitational, Friday at the Junell Center / Stephens Arena.

Huston-Tillotson (0-2) – W, 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-21)

In the first set, UTPB and Huston-Tillotson went back-and-forth early.  Tied at 6-6, junior Gabby Gregorski dropped in an ace.  That started a run of seven straight points to seal the game.

The second set was a battle with the Falcons taking a slight 12-9 lead over the Rams.  UT Permian Basin forced a hitting error to start a streak of four straight points to take control.

The third set early on was a repeat of the first set with UTPB taking a 6-5 lead.  Freshman Mya Black and junior April Egwu came up with a monster block.  The Falcons went on a 10-3 run to close out the set.

For UT Permian Basin, senior Stephanie Sanchez had eight kills, four blocks and hit .368 while seniors Gloria Geurin and Cassandra Rother both hit .333 or better.  Gregorski collected 26 digs while junior Chyra Thompson had four blocks.

For Huston-Tillotson, Adeja Peterson had 10 kills and 13 digs and Danelle McCollough had 14 digs.

Southwest (0-2) – W, 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-2)

In the first set, UTPB came out as hot as the Texas weather, jumping to a 5-0 lead.  Southwest collected themselves and battled back to 7-4.  The Falcons ripped off five straight points and never looked back.

In the second set, UT Permian Basin and Southwest slugged it out early.  An ace pulled the Mustangs to one, 4-3.  UTPB the exploded with a 13-4 burst to put the game away.

In the third set, the Falcons were all over Southwest to put the match away.

For UT Permian Basin, junior Aaliyah Gray had seven kills and hit .462 and Rother hit .714 with four aces.  Sophomore Jenna Gray served up four aces and junior Reann Cato had 15 digs.

As a team, the Falcons hit .329 and had nine aces.

For Southwest, Alyssa Barrera had 11 digs.

UT Permian Basin closes out the tournament, Saturday, Sept. 2 taking on Henderson State and Angelo State.  The games are scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., respectively.
