Falcons Outlast Patriots in Series Opening Slugfest

ODESSA – If you like offense, Roden Field was the place to be for Friday afternoon's series opener between UT Permian Basin and UT Tyler.  The teams combined for 21 runs and 27 hits, but in the end the Falcons came away victorious in their first action in 10 days.

Six Falcons had multi-hit games including Ethan Flodstrom, Mason Hamlin, and Cooper Ciesielski who each had three knocks on the day.  Ciesielski also led the Falcons with three RBI in the win.

The Falcons were able to break through in the third inning.  Carson Johnson drove in the first run of the game with a base hit through the left side.  Two batters the later, Ciesielski's bases loaded double drove in three runs for the 4-0 lead.  Two batters later an error allowed him to score and the Falcons were up five.

The Patriots got a run back in their half of the fifth, but the Falcons answered with another five-run inning.  Austin Hall plated Brent Rigtrup to push the lead back to five.  Ethan Babcock-Barrie's sacrifice bunt scored another run.  Michael Clapperton singled to move Hall to third with one out.  Christian Rodriguez drove in two more on a triple to right before scoring himself on a single by Flodstrom to make it 10-1.

Rigtrup drove in another run in the sixth on a single to answer a run by the Patriots.  A rally in the seventh by the Patriots made it 11-6, but the Falcon offense answered right back in their half of the inning.  Rigtrup reached on a throwing error, allowing two runs to score, before scoring later in the inning on a single by Hall.  The Patriots scored once again in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons came away victorious 14-7.

Trevor Barth was terrific for the Falcons, throwing 6.2 innings and striking out four, for his fourth win of the season.  The win tied him with Creede Jeffers for the team lead.  The top five in the order scored at least two runs.

These two teams are back at it tomorrow in doubleheader action with first pitched scheduled for noon from Roden Field.
