ODESSA, TX –
Mason Hamlin's home run to left center brought UT Permian Basin baseball team to within one, but the Falcons could not push across the tying run as they fell 4-3 to visiting Eastern New Mexico University on Friday morning.
The game was originally scheduled to begin around noon, but the start time was pushed to 9 a.m. to circumvent the impending windstorm that came through the area.
UTPB got a great start out of
Trevor Barth on the mound as the righty held the Greyhounds scoreless until the top of the fourth when a two-out error allowed the game's first run to score.
Cooper Ciesielski breathed life back into the Falcons when his two-out single to center field to score
Carson Johnson and tie the game at 1-1.
UTPB answered a Greyhound run in the bottom of the sixth when Johnson led off the frame with a single to left and scored from first on a throwing error by the shortstop on the next play to tie the game at 2-2.
ENMU retook the lead on a two-out single up the middle in the top of the seventh to up the Greyhounds ahead 4-2.
Hamlin then hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh to bring the Falcons to within one at 4-3 but the team could not get the tying run across the plate.
Barth would toss 6.1 innings giving up four runs with three being earned on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Both teams return to Roden Field for a Saturday doubleheader as the Falcons look to rebound from today's disappointing result. First pitch for Game 1 on Saturday is slated for noon.
