UTPB Edges Past Lions In Thriller

ODESSA, Texas - It was another fight to the finish as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team (7-2, 3-1 Lone Star Conference) beat Arkansas Fort Smith (3-7, 1-3  LSC) 70-68, Saturday afternoon at the Falcon Dome.

UTPB came out of the gates off and running.  Sophomore Makala Bingley knocked down a three from the rafters.  That put the Falcons up 8-0 at the 8:27 mark.

Arkansas Fort Smith came back with nine straight points to lead 9-8 with 5:45 to go.  For the rest of the first half, UT Permian Basin and the Lions played on even terms.

Tied at 29 starting the third period, UTPB scored the first 12 points to jump out 41-29 at the 7:09 mark.  The Falcons maintained at least a seven point lead the rest of the period.

UAFS began to chip away in the fourth and took the lead, 66-63 with 1:54 left.  Junior Morgan Helgesen dropped in a trey from deep out space to tie it at 66 at the 1:41 mark.

Arkansas Fort Smith took the lead back at 68-66 just in front of a minute left.  Senior Andreea Mancha hit a driving lay-up with 39 seconds left to make it 68-68. 

With eight seconds left, Helgesen was fouled and hit both free throws to put UT Permian Basin up 70-68.  The Lions missed a shot with two seconds left and graduate student Alexus Quaadman grabbed the rebound to clinch the win.

For UT Permian Basin, Helgesen finished with 19 points, Mancha had 18 points, five assists, two steals and hit four triples and Quaadman had 16 points and 17 rebounds.

For Arkansas Fort Smith, Hannah Boyett scored 15 points.

UT Permian Basin stays at home, Friday, Dec. 15 taking on Northern New Mexico.  The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
