UTPB Nips Eagles In Nail Biter

ODESSA, Texas – It was a crazy finish as The University of Texas Permian Basin men's basketball team (6-2, 2-1 Lone Star Conference) edged Oklahoma Christian (2-6, 0-3 LSC) 76-73, Thursday night at the Falcon Dome.

UTPB jumped out to a 15-7 lead by the 14:54 mark.  Oklahoma Christian fought its way back closing to 15-13 with 14:03 to go.  The Falcons scored five straight points and led by at least seven points the last 13 minutes of the half.

With 11:02 to go in the game, UT Permian Basin led 58-48 and was in control.  The Eagles refused to quit and crept back in.  At the 3:08 mark, OCU scored to go up 67-66.

For the rest of the way, it was a game of trading buckets.  With 12.1 seconds left, junior Zy Wright got an offensive board and scored.  That put UTPB up 74-73.

Oklahoma Christian came down but Wright forced a steal.  The ball was recovered by junior Alex Matthews who was fouled.  He hit both free throws for a 76-73 lead with 2.1 seconds left.  The Eagles 3-pointer was off target just in front of the buzzer.

For UT Permian Basin, senior Keyon Craddock scored 21 points with three triples and was 6-of-12 from the floor, Matthews had 21 points and was 7-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the line, junior Ty Briscoe scored 14 points and graduate student Lathaniel Bastian had 10 points, 12 rebounds and blocked two shots.

For Oklahoma Christian, Moun'tae Edmundson had 20 points.

UTPB remains home, Saturday, Dec. 9 playing Arkansas Fort Smith.  The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
