UTPB Pulls Away From Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, Texas - Graduate student Alexus Quaadman had a massive double-double as The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team (5-2, 1-1 Lone Star Conference) beat Texas A&M Kingsville (4-5, 0-2 LSC) 77-60, Saturday afternoon at the Steinke Center.

Texas A&M Kingsville came out like a house a fire, getting off to an 8-1 lead by the 6:42 mark.  UTPB stormed back with junior Avalon Munoz knocking down a triple from outside the parking lot.

That tied the game at 8-8.  The rest of the first period was back-and-forth scoring resulting in the Falcons leading 20-16 heading into the second period.

UT Permian Basin was all over the court going on an 11-3 burst.  A pair of charity tosses by junior Morgan Helgesen put UTPB up 31-19 with 5:39 to go.  The Javelinas finished the period on a 13-5 run to cut the lead to 36-32 at halftime.

For the first five minutes of the third period, the Falcons and TAMK were trading buckets until 45-41, UT Permian Basin with 4:43 to go.  Senior Andreea Mancha hit a fast break lay-up to start a 15-2 run the rest of the period to seal the game.

For UT Permian Basin, graduate student Kamryn Lemon had 18 points, six assists and four steals and was 7-of-12 from the floor, Quaadman scored 15 points with 18 rebounds and Mancha had 14 points with three triples.  Quaadman passed Miesha Blackshear (2010-11) for sixth in all-time scoring.  She now has 819 points.

For Texas A&M Kingsville, Shelby Ray had 11 points and four steals and Veyda Lake scored 10 points.

UT Permian Basin returns home, Thursday, Dec. 7 taking on Oklahoma Christian.  The game is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m.
