Falcons Knock Down Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Five players scored in double-digits as The University of Texas Permian Basin men's basketball team (5-2, 1-1 Lone Star Conference) came from behind to beat Texas A&M Kingsville (2-5, 0-2 LSC) 87-77, Saturday afternoon at the Steinke Center.

For almost the entire first half, UTPB and Texas A&M Kingsville played on even terms.  There were five lead changes and four ties.  Junior Zy Wright hit a bucket to tie the game at 22 with 4:03 to go.

The Javelinas scored eight straight points over the next 90 seconds.  TAMK had a lead of at least eight points the rest of the half, leading 36-27 at halftime.

In the second half, the Falcons made their move, down 43-35 at the 15:44 mark.  Junior DJ Armstrong rattled in a triple to end a run of nine straight points.  That put UT Permian Basin up 44-43 with 13:38 to go.

UTPB pushed the lead to 12, 68-56 at the 6:10 mark.  Texas A&M Kingsville cut the gap to 72-67 with 3:24 to go.  The Falcons came back with an 8-2 run to seal the game.

UTPB had 27 defensive rebounds to just four offensive for the Javelinas.  The Falcons held Texas A&M Kingsville to just 29.2% on 3-pointers.  UTPB finished shooting 54% from the floor and 46.2% from behind the arc.

For UT Permian Basin, Wright scored 19 points, junior Alex Matthews had 18 points and shot 8-of-12 from the floor, graduate student Lathaniel Bastian had 17 points with 11 rebounds and senior Keyon Craddock scored 17 points, six assists and was 13-of-14 from the line.  Armstrong had 10 points and three steals.

For Texas A&M Kingsville, C.J. Smith had 27 points and four steals.

UTPB is back home, Thursday, Dec. 7 playing Oklahoma Christian.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
