Falcons Keep Skyhawks Grounded

ODESSA, Texas – Everything fell into place as The University of Texas Permian Basin men's basketball team (8-3, 3-2 Lone Star Conference) beat Navajo Tech (0-5) 128-42, Monday night at the Falcon Dome.

UTPB scored first as junior Alex Matthews hit a lay-up 22 seconds after the opening tipoff.  The Falcons would score the first 27 points of the contest to seal the game early.

Offensively, UT Permian Basin set a school record by shooting 68.1% from the floor.  The old mark had been 63.2 against Randall (Dec. 18, 2021).  The 128 points was second highest in program history, three shy of the record.  The Falcons also recorded 34 assists to break the school record of 31.

Defensively, UTPB held the Skyhawks to 23.8% from the floor and 18.5% from behind the arc.  The Falcons dominated the boards with 51 rebounds to just 28 for Navajo Tech.  UTPB was efficient on turnovers scoring 37 points off 20 forced turnovers.

For UT Permian Basin, graduate student Lathaniel Bastian and Matthews both had a double-double.  Bastian had 16 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, four steals and blocked two shots while Matthews scored 18 points with 11 rebounds and was 8-of-12 from the floor.  This was Bastian fifth straight double-double and eighth of the season.

Junior DJ Armstrong scored 19 points with four steals and five 3-pointers and junior Maison Adeleye had 14 points with three triples

Finishing out the double-digit scorers were junior Zy Wright with 16 points, junior Ty Briscoe with 15 points and senior Keyon Craddock with 15 points, 10 assists and three treys.

For Navajo Tech, Joshua Tillman scored eight points.

UTPB is off until Thursday, Jan. 4 when they host Eastern New Mexico.  The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
